Smokefree Homes

‘Take the smoke outside’

The Smokefree Homes campaign, developed by the HSC and The Quit Group, encourages smokers to protect their children from second-hand smoke by ‘taking the smoke outside’.

Children are especially vulnerable to second-hand smoke, and New Zealand research shows that young people exposed to second-hand smoke at home are more likely to become daily smokers themselves.

The first Smokefree Homes television commercial
shows the harmful chemicals that are in second-hand smoke and went to air in April 2004. A second commercial that went to air shortly afterwards, shows how you can protect children from second-hand smoke by ‘taking the smoke outside’. A third (15 second) commercial encourages smokers to call the Quitline for quit support and advice.

In 2006 the Smokefree Homes television commercial was altered slightly to provide consistency with the Smokefree Cars campaign.

Print and radio advertising helped support the campaign, and a number of smokefree homes resources were also developed.
