Second-hand Smoke Media Campaigns

As an organisation that has been involved in the tobacco control sector for many years, the HSC has also been involved in developing and delivering campaigns and resources to address the issues surrounding second-hand smoke for some time.

The latest development is the launch of the Smokefree Cars media campaign on 10 September 2006.

Prior to this work the HSC addressed issues such as Smokefree legislation and smoking in the workplace and home.

In 2004, the Ministry of Health contracted the HSC to develop a smokefree legislation media campaign to help publicise the smokefree workplaces law that banned smoking in all indoor workplaces, including bars, clubs and restaurants from 10 December 2004.

Prior to this, the Ministry of Health contracted the HSC and The Quit Group to develop a second-hand smoke media campaign in 2003.

The campaign aimed to increase protection for non-smokers by informing people about the dangers of second-hand smoke, and to protect the health of non-smokers by encouraging smokers to smoke outside.

The first phase of the media campaign looked at second-hand smoke in the workplace, and the second phase focused on second-hand smoke in the home.
